The Aroma of Deception
Kai, an alien from Xylos, has spent over a decade on Earth, meticulously maintaining a human facade as a barista. Their true passion isn't espionage, but the complex, comforting ritual of brewing coffee. We see Kai's almost superhuman precision in their craft, a subtle hint of their alien nature. Life is routine, peaceful, and caffeine-filled in their beloved coffee shop. However, a new customer, Detective Harding, starts frequenting the shop. Harding is unusually observant, asking specific questions about Kai's past and home town. A minor malfunction with Kai's internal communication device causes a brief energy flicker that only Harding seems to notice, giving Kai a jolt of anxiety. During a busy rush, Kai instinctively uses a minor telekinetic ability to prevent a stack of cups from crashing, just as Harding is watching. Kai quickly covers it as a lucky save, but Harding's eyes linger. Kai receives a garbled, urgent message through their internal communicator – a distress signal from Xylos, a planet they thought they'd abandoned. The message is fragmented but suggests something catastrophic is unfolding. Kai realizes their peaceful coffee-making days might be over, and Harding's presence feels less coincidental.
